Elsie Irene Negley was born July 29, 1911, in Buchanan Township, near Siam, Iowa the daughter of Clarence Carr and Flossie (Hiles) Carr. She was a member of the Fairview Church of Christ. Elsie exhibited her Christian character through her generosity, joyful optimism, and her love of all living things, which made her an extraordinary human being. She started a teaching career in a one room country school where she rode a horse 4 miles to school. She ‘logged’ every child’s name in her book of students. After her marriage to Paul Negley in 1932, she helped with farm life and raising a family. As Paul’s health declined, she returned to teaching in rural schools and eventually moved to Clarinda where she taught 6th grade and served as Principal at the McKinley Grade School. She completed a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education while teaching. One of her greatest pleasures in retirement was seeing ‘her students’ succeed in life and return to see her. Her love of teaching never waned. She became a second mom to Mitsumi and Cindy, students from Japan and China, who came to live with her during their stay in Clarinda. After retirement, she continued working at the Clarinda Junior College Library and volunteering at the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum. Throughout the years, Elsie enjoyed genealogy, flowers, gardening, music and tutoring Japanese students. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Club.

Left to cherish Elsie’s memory are two sons, Richard Paul Negley and wife Janet of Clarinda, Iowa; Marvin Carr Negley and wife Jean of Clarinda, Iowa; a daughter, Linda (Negley) Taylor and husband Darrel Barnes of Springfield, Missouri; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Edith Carr of Texas; along with many family members, students and friends.

Preceding Elsie in death are her parents Clarence and Flossie Carr; her loving husband Paul Negley; two brothers, Byrle Carr and wife Joan; and John Carr; a sister, Elaine Smith and husband Cecil; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Goldsberry and Mary Lou Madden and their spouses.

Elsie’s kind heart and gentle spirit flowed through her life
in her love of gardening, music and most of all ~ family.
She will always be remembered and missed by those who loved her.
May she be at peace in God’s loving care.
