Les Brooke, named Leslie Dale Brooke, was born on October 17, 1934 in Clarinda, Iowa to Lester DeForest Brooke and Mary Linette (Stephens) Brooke. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and attended school in Clarinda, graduating in 1953. He enjoyed roller skating and playing football. He joined the United States Marine Corp after graduating from high school. While on a two-week leave before he left for Korea, he married Marnice Steeve on November 7, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He then served in Korea from 1953 to 1955. He was a sergeant who was tasked with hanging communication lines while dangling from a helicopter, at the 38th Parallel. His favorite TV show was MASH.

Once he was out of the service, Les and Marnice lived in Kansas City, near the Plaza. She was still in nurses training, and Les worked at a filling station.

They moved back to Page County, Iowa in 1959, and bought a farm just south of Bethesda, near Marnice’s parents. Les’ interest in agriculture was sparked from helping his Uncle Jim Stephens farm as a teenager. He raised corn, soybeans, alfalfa, hogs, and cattle. They raised four children: Diane, Denise, Lee and Lori. He liked to travel to Colorado with his family to see his parents and relatives every summer. As a teenager, Les liked to hunt, especially with his uncles and cousins, and helped his uncles on their turkey farm in Boulder, Co. Les and Marnice also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, Texas, Arizona, Branson and Hawaii.

Les was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, where he served in various leadership roles. He was a member of various agricultural organizations and the VFW. He and Marnice were members of the Clarinda Country Club where they enjoyed golfing and socializing for many years.

Les had several close friends, many of which were his childhood buddies and especially enjoyed class reunions. He always smiled and laughed and loved telling stories with his friends and cousins. He also loved his daily McDonald’s coffee group. He appreciated their company when they came to visit.

He loved to tease his grandchildren and was very proud of each of them. He spent many hours sitting on a bleacher watching them play sports. He also liked Bacardi and Coke, gravy, peach pie, and any kind of soup. Les was an excellent cook and ran Marnice out of the kitchen when he retired from farming. He enjoyed entertaining and feeding his friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lester Brooke, and Mary Stephens Brooke; one sister Barbara Brooke Kaiser; and one nephew Michael Geer.

Les is survived by his wife, Marnice Steeve Brooke, of Clarinda; four children: Diane (husband Chris Higgins) of Cedar Rapids, Denise (husband Thom Albin) of Centennial, CO, Lee (wife Darla Schrader) of Clarinda, IA and Lori (husband David Graenser) of Clarinda, IA; six grandchildren: Katie Graenser of Clarinda, Blake Higgins of Cedar Rapids, Drew (wife Rachel) Higgins of Centerville, IA, Bailey (husband Cody) Clubb of Clarinda, Leah Brooke of Clarinda, Iowa, and Logan Brooke of Clarinda; two step-grandchildren Kathryn Albin of Aurora, CO, and Thomas Albin III of Greencastle, IN; one great-grandson Bowen Clubb of Clarinda, and one step-great-grandson Julian Albin of Aurora, CO; one niece Linn Dawson of Thornton, CO, and one great nephew Aaron Dawson of Thornton, CO; plus many cousins and great-nieces and nephews.

Les will be missed by his loving family and friends, but his memories will forever be in their hearts.
