Lota Clair (McGinness) (Williams) Beery
Lota Clair McGinness was born July 21, 1927. She was the second child of Glen Roland and Velma Pauline (Hayden) McGinness. She was born at home (the Catterson Farm) north of Maryville, Missouri, in Nodaway County. She started to school at Elm Grove school, south and east of the Catterson farm and later transferred to Union school, north and east of the farm. In 1936, the family moved 1 ½ miles south of Clearmont, Missouri on Hwy 71 on the Mutz farm and started school in Clearmont. Her family moved to near Quitman so she boarded with a woman in Clearmont to continue school there. Lota graduated from Clearmont High School in 1945 as the valedictorian of her class. She received 5 scholarships but was unable to use them due to financial conditions.
Lota went to St. Joseph, Missouri to look for work but returned home in a few weeks in order to help her mother who had contracted yellow jaundice and care for her younger sisters. After her mother regained her health, Lota returned to St. Joseph and shared a sleeping room with her sister Mary. She worked at Western Tablet Factory and also at Kresegers. She finally found a job at National Bellas Hess, a catalog company where she typed address stencils.
She met Harold Willams through mutual friends, Marvin Johnson and Marvis Bast. At that time, Mary and Lota had a sleeping room at their Aunt Ruth and Leroy Rickmans. Harold and Lota were married December 26, 1946, at Troy Kansas. After the nuptials, they loaded up Lota’s possessions from St. Joseph and headed for the farm Harold was renting west of Shambaugh, Iowa. Their first daughter, Gloria Ann, was born in 1947. They moved east of Shambaugh and daughter Linda Kathleen was born in 1949. They then moved to a farm north and west of Clearmont. Finally achieving their ultimate dream, they bought a farm north of Mound City, Missouri. Their third daughter, Valora Jean, was born in 1955.
Harold was not feeling well the spring of 1958. He went to the doctor at Maryville, Missouri and was immediately hospitalized. Two weeks after being operated on for cancer, Harold lost his life. Family and neighbors planted and harvested the crops but Lota made the difficult decision to sell the livestock and the land. She chose to purchase a home in Clarinda, Iowa where she might find work easier than employment in Maryville, a college town with a student workforce. This home was the first she had owned with running water and a bathroom.
After Jeannie entered kindergarten, Lota worked at JC Penny as a clerk. She then took a job with the Clarinda Company where she was a Lina film keyboard operator. She had excellent skills with the calculations that the many scientific tables and charts in the textbooks required, as well as an extremely accurate typist. In 1967, Lota and daughters Kathy and Jeannie moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois. She worked at Black Dot, Inc. which was a publishing company started by several former employees of the Clarinda Company. After 4 years there, Lota missed living near family and she and Jeannie moved back to Clarinda and she was employed by the Clarinda Company again until her retirement in May, 1991. She was married to Don Beery in 1974, however, the marriage eventually ended.
Lota was a cancer survivor of almost 30 years. She was a very independent woman with a strong will and tenacity. When asked how she raised three children as a single parent, she would say that she did what she had to do. Lota never complained about her circumstances. She enjoyed her family and was loved by many. Friends and family called her Lotie or Aunt Lotie. Lota and her siblings remained close and had many fun times together. Through the years, she loved reminiscing with her brothers and sisters. She enjoyed word searches, crossword puzzles and board puzzles. She had an excellent memory of names and dates before her health declined. Lota moved to Westridge Care Center in 2015 where she resided until her death. She was loved by many employees there and her roommate Norma Allen became a dear sister to her. Lota passed away at the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 29 days at Westridge Care Center.
