Obituary for Vernon Ross Annan

Vernon “Ross” Annan, age 93, of Gladstone, Missouri entered into peace Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Heritage Village Assisted Living Facility, Gladstone, Missouri. Funeral Celebration of Life Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation will be held Saturday at Ritchie Funeral Home from 10 to 11 AM with the family greeting friends. Interment will be held at the Polsley Cemetery, rural Yorktown, Iowa with military rites by the Nebraska Honor Guard. Memorials may be directed to Polsley Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on our website at, www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa, where we ‘Celebrate Life’.

Vernon Ross Annan was born March 11, 1926 in Page County, Iowa to Henry Norman Annan and Ruth Catherine (Montgomery) Annan. He grew up in the Coin/College Springs area and graduated from Amity High School, College Springs, Iowa with the class of 1944. Vernon was called to service for his country in 1944 during World War II. Between active duty and the reserves, he was in the military for thirty one years. In 1961 Vernon moved his family to Kansas City, Missouri and began working for the U.S. Postal Service. While in the reserves, he attended the General Staff & Command School at Ft. Leavenworth from 1966-1970. He was on the United States Army marksman team from 1971-1974 and was considered one of the top five in the United States.

Vernon retired from the US Army in 1975 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Vernon was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for forty years, retiring in 2001.

Vernon was united in marriage August 5, 1954 to Wilma Gladys Simmons. They were blessed with three children, Deborah, Twyla and Steven.

Vernon was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with current events. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and spending time with them. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Iowa and Missouri for over fifty years. Vernon enjoyed following the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs. He and Wilma also enjoyed visiting the Kansas City casinos in their retirement.

Preceding Vernon in death were his parents; wife, Wilma Annan; daughter, Deborah Gramlich and son, Steven Annan.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Twyla Cochran and husband George of Gladstone, Missouri; grandchildren, Kamell Brasher and husband John of Athens, Georgia, Melanie Cochran of Gladstone, Missouri and Connor Annan of Gladstone, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
