Gerald (Jerry) John Joens, age 86, the youngest of eight siblings, was born to Henry and Esther (Bollinger) Joens, July 15, 1931, in a farmhouse near Havelock, Iowa. He grew up in a farming family, graduating high school from Ruthven, Iowa, in 1948. For the next few years he worked for several local farmers before being drafted into the US Army in 1952. He spent two years in the service, including one year in South Korea during the Korean War. After returning to civilian life, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Jane Miller, on December 5, 1954. Jerry and Shirley were married 63 years, and had one son, Curt. Jerry is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Curtis; daughter in law, Margie; and grandchildren Hannah, Joshua, and Jeffrey Joens; and married grandchild Heidi Andrade and her husband Carlos Andrade; brother, Charles Joens; and sister, Alene Dean.
Jerry spent most of his working years as the Morton Buildings regional sales office manager in Clarinda. But one of the most enjoyable jobs he had was in retirement when he worked as a school bus driver for the Clarinda Community School District. He “retired” from that career in 2012 at the age of 80. Many former Clarinda students will remember trips to Dairy Queen on the last day of school and Christmas cards stuffed with a crisp two-dollar bill.
Shirley and Jerry had a retirement partnership venture in making crafts. Jerry used his woodworking skills to build schoolhouses, Noah’s arks, state of Iowa emblems, Christmas ornaments, etc., and Shirley would paint them. They also enjoyed tending their productive garden and many fruit trees, then preparing jams, apple sauce, pies, and canning and freezing produce.
Many trips were made over the years visiting Curt, Margie, and the grandkids in Texas. Jerry was very proud of and close to his grandchildren, and they loved hearing his stories, and the fact that he remained young at heart – snow sledding and doing water park rides with them well into his seventies.
Jerry was devoted to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and loved the Word of God. He served many years as the Clarinda United Methodist adult Sunday school class teacher and enjoyed singing in the church choir. On his visits to Texas he would also frequently join his son on various local ministry projects.
We will miss our Husband, Dad, and Papa; but look forward to seeing him again when we join him in heaven.
